![]() ![]() I know I’d do the same thing if I were him.īACON: fragile at that point… Teeth are a symbol of vibrancy, health, and youth. As a viewer, I relate to it because it’s that inability to not pick at it, to not make it worse… but you have to see how bad it is. When I look at this scene, I see someone’s body falling apart before their eyes. Without hesitation, I said aging, because it is. One of asked me once what the scariest idea for a horror film would be. It’s a fear of your body crumbling and dying, which, as it turns out, is a pretty darn legitimate fear, because it’s going to happen. KOEPP: based on a nightmare I had… It’s a classic aging dream. Nearly 20 years later, the director and star tell EW what went into making the iconic scene, the viewing of which is still as painful as getting a root canal (as was dealing with the looming presence of The Sixth Sense, a similarly themed film which ‘completely f-d’ Stir of Echoes’ trajectory, Bacon says). Long before the Saw franchise was splitting jaws and Oldboy took a hammer to a poor, unfortunate soul’s pearly whites, David Koepp’s Stir of Echoes permanently drilled into our skulls one of the most cringe-inducing, orally discomforting scenes of the 1990s, in which the father of a psychic tyke, Tom Witzky (Kevin Bacon) - plagued by haunting visions of a ghostly girl from beyond the grave - yanks out his own tooth during a supernatural fever dream. TL DR: Despite knowing the ending, you should watch it anyways, you'll most likely enjoy it at least as much as you would have otherwise. They'll also be angry at you for spoiling it in the first place, of course. Most people will be very upset by having a story that they are looking forward to spoiled, and that negative feeling can easily marr their enjoyment of the actual story.Ģ) Telling someone that they'll enjoy the story more now after you have just spoiled it for them is like telling a mother that there's no such thing as a "sugar high": Angry denial. The study deliberately hid the spoiler in an unassuming description of the story to make sure that the emotional impact of the spoiler is minimal. I should point out that this doesn't mean I'm condoning spoiling people (as indicated by me warning about the spoilers in the video), for two main reasons:ġ) This doesn't mean that being spoiled doesn't still feel bad. In fact, the study shows that people enjoy the story more if it was spoiled. (The Book of Shadows "sequel" sucked but I did enjoy the 2016 movie).ĭespite our visceral reaction to having something spoiled, it doesn't actually make us enjoy a story any less (the video contains minor spoilers for GOT season 6, major spoilers for "The Usual Suspects" and "Lamb to the Slaughter") than if we'd remained unspoiled. I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to see that film at the perfect time. Nor will the feeling of being on the edge of my seat nearly the entire movie. The looks on the faces of those leaving the earliest viewing (we had tickets for the second set of times) will never leave my memory. You go into the theater knowing that "surely they didn't make a movie from this stuff" but the entire aspect of it being low budget and a really a yet to be defined genre allowed you to believe for those moments that it was legit. Basically just that website and a few well placed stories about these missing kids. It was the perfect storm in terms of timing for online media and viral marketing. It was before anything more than the creepy found footage was revealed. ![]() It was before any of the actors were on late night shows. I tell people who saw it late in theaters or even after DVD release that they missed the prime opportunity for viewing. Because the neighbors give you enough clues to figure it out, you know what happened. When you finish the movie it's not really a 'twist' ending like the Sixth Sense (where it sort of just comes out of nowhere with very few clues to help you come to that conclusion). The neighbors don't give him clues as to what happened but give you clues as to what happened. His son begins to give him clues to solve it.Īll the while his friends around the neighborhood begin questioning his sanity. He can't figure out what's compelling him to do this. He begins to hear a voice yelling "DIG" so he begins digging everywhere. He can't identify what it is so he learns to play guitar so he can strum it out and figure out what it is. This 'opens his mind' to the supernatural world and allows him to experience small flashes of residual left overs of dead people. Kevin Bacon gets hypnotized by his sister in law as a joke. His kid is kind of weird (like in the Sixth Sense) and can hear supernatural things. The movie is about Kevin Bacon and his new wife and kid. ![]()
